Storyboard and Visual Development

This body of work is from my storyboarding course where students learn about visual storytelling. Students are instructed to choose a short story and then choose a portion of that story to bring to life in a storyboard or animatic. We also learn about visual development and spend time defining the look and feel of our stories.

Interaction Design

This was a 3rd year, 5 credit course where students had to create their own interactive application. Some students were interested in interactive storytelling, while others were interested in utility applications for web and mobile. Because the course covered a broad spectrum of interaction design, students learned about various mediums such as games, navigation and social media apps, and interactive installations. Once students learned about the spectrum of interaction design, they were directed to choose a focus. If the focus was gaming and AR/VR, XR experiences, students had to learn, not only UX principles, but also world building and narrative design so they could develop an immersive experience. It was a well-rounded course which produced many unique projects. Some students collaborated with IT students so they can have a functioning demo by the end of the semester. The course wrapped up with a final exhibition where students could invite family, friends, faculty, and administrators to play their demos or talk about their interaction designs.

Fictional Civilization Studio

This body of work is from a 5 credit studio course which students take during their 4th year. In this course, students are given the task of creating a fictional civilization together, as a collaborative effort with the entire class. Topics such as politics, sociology, history, and creative writing are covered as we learn world building. This course involves students from industrial design, interior design, and digital design majors, so each knowledge base offers something unique to the production. Industrial designers may specialize in weaponry and tools of the civilization, while interiors may focus on the living spaces of this fictitious race. Digital designers exercise their storytelling skills in creating concept artwork and character designs of these fictional people. At the end of the course, the class presents their work in a mock museum exhibit as though they are archaeologists presenting a lost civilization they discovered.
